Golfing the Grand Strand in May: My Favorite Time of Year

2025-05-05 by Ben Hunt

There’s something special about May on the Grand Strand. The air is just right—not too hot, not too humid—and every golf course seems to be showing off a little more than usual. I’ve played a lot of rounds up and down this stretch of Carolina coastline, but May? That’s my favorite time to tee it up.

The mornings start cool and calm, just enough chill in the air to make that first sip of coffee hit different as you load your clubs into the cart. By mid-morning, the sun’s warmed things up, but it’s never overbearing. High 70s, a coastal breeze, and those long daylight hours that make you feel like maybe—just maybe—you’ll have time for another nine after lunch.

PGA Vibes Right Here at Home

One of the biggest reasons I love May golf around here is the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic. It’s not every day you get to watch a PGA TOUR event in your backyard, and this one brings some serious energy. It’s held at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club—an old-school course with just enough bite to keep the pros honest. Watching them play the same holes I’ve struggled with (hello, 13th hole) gives me a whole new appreciation for the game—and a bit of perspective, too.

This year it runs May 8–11, and if you’re thinking about coming down, I highly recommend planning around that weekend. The crowds are friendly, the setup is world-class, and there’s just a buzz in the air all along the Strand.

A Salute to Service—And to Good Golf

Later in the month, things take a meaningful turn with the Veterans Golf Classic and the National Retired Military Golf Classic. These aren’t just tournaments—they’re traditions. I’ve met some incredible folks during these events, and the camaraderie is something you don’t forget. If you’re a veteran or just want to be part of something bigger than the game, these events are worth checking out.

My Two Can’t-Miss Courses

Now, I’ve played a lot of courses in this area—more than I care to admit. But if I had to point someone toward just two spots to truly feel the Grand Strand golf experience, it’s always the same answer: Caledonia and True Blue.

Caledonia Golf & Fish Club feels like a southern dream. Spanish moss hanging over the fairways, the smell of salt air in the breeze, and a layout that rewards brains over brawn. I love it because it forces you to think your way around the course—but it never punishes you unfairly. Every shot is a story.

And then there’s True Blue, right down the road. It’s bold. Wide fairways, big bunkers, dramatic visuals—it’s the kind of course that makes you want to hit driver even when you shouldn’t. But man, it’s fun. I usually try to play both back-to-back when I can. Same designer (Mike Strantz), totally different personalities.

Planning Your May Golf Getaway

If you’re thinking about a Grand Strand golf trip in May, here’s my advice:

– Book your tee times early—especially for the big names like Caledonia. May is no secret around here.

– Look into golf packages. Plenty of resorts offer stay-and-play deals that bundle everything together.

– Keep an eye on the forecast, but don’t stress—most days are pure sunshine with just enough breeze to keep things comfortable.

Why May Just Works

Golf in May here hits differently. The courses are in great shape after spring growth, the crowds are just right—not too light, not overwhelming—and you get the full Grand Strand experience without the midsummer chaos. Plus, there’s something about wrapping up a round, grabbing a cold drink, and watching the sun sink behind the marsh that just feels right.

If you make it down here this month, maybe I’ll see you out there. I’ll be the guy smiling after a bogey, just happy to be swinging in the South Carolina sunshine.

Couples that Golf along Coastal Carolinas

2023-09-05 by

Are you and your significant other looking for new ways to strengthen your relationship? Consider hitting the greens together and experience the benefits of playing golf as a couple. Here are the top three reasons why couples who play golf together stay together:
Firstly, challenges on the golf course can bring couples closer together as they work together to achieve a common goal. Secondly, golf provides a fun and relaxing environment to spend quality time together. Lastly, golf allows couples to learn from each other and improve their game as a team. So, grab your clubs and hit the course with your significant other for a stronger and more enjoyable relationship!

Not sure if you and your significant other ever hit the greens together, so we thought we’d list the top three reasons why couples who play together, stay together. If your relationship could use a boost or you’re just looking for even more ways to learn something new with your special someone, implement these three tips and you’re sure to be on the road to a stronger (and more fun) relationship.

It’s Challenging

Relationships face all kinds of challenges on a daily basis – financially, emotionally and professionally. Being supportive of your spouse through challenges applies to both the times spent in the rough and the times spent on the green. Whether your spouse is trying to score a birdie on a par 3 or learning how to simply “hit it straight” – challenges forge a pathway toward achievement. Through support and being their #1 fan your spouse will be well on their way to a “hole in one.”

It’s Rewarding

Be honest – was there ever a moment when you didn’t experience personal satisfaction in someone telling you “Good work!” or “Awesome job!”? It’s amazing how far a simple word of encouragement can go – and the same applies in relationships. When your spouse scores the birdie on the par 3 or finally “hits it straight,” be sure to let them know how great they did. No one likes to work hard for something they don’t get recognized for – especially women!

It’s FUN!

One of the most common misconceptions about golf is that it can be boring, especially for those who are beginners to the game – when in reality, golf can be a very FUN sport! By creating simple 1 on 1 competition with your spouse like “Closest to the Pin” on a Par 3 or “Trouble” in which the goal is to avoid the bunkers and hazards – the opportunities for laughter and good memories are endless. Having fun with your better half is one of the most important fundamentals of any relationship and a foolproof path to happiness.

Hot Golf in August

2018-07-29 by

August is upon us, which means hot deals at Grand Strand Courses and good course conditions almost everywhere! We have had a lot of rain locally in July, bordering on really wet, but with just enough time to dry out each week. Many local courses are reopening after a really bad winter kill, some just in the last week or two. That means fresh greens and being able to play on courses you haven’t seen in a while!

One major factor no matter where you play in August is the heat. We’ve got a few tips to remember as you hit the links:

  • Early play is cooler. Not everyone is an early riser, but this is the month to get the earliest tee times if you can. Make sure to Book Ahead for the coolest tee times!
  • Stay hydrated. This is NOT as simple as it sounds. Drinking plenty of fluids during your round will not be enough. You need to actually begin at least one day prior to your round. Possibly even earlier if you’re flying to your golf destination. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Wear loose, light-colored clothing made of moisture wicking material. The goal here is to keep the clothes breathable and not have them stick to you when you start to sweat. You’ll feel more comfortable, stay cooler and play better.
  • Pack a backup. Why not have a fresh shirt for the back nine? Not only will you feel fresher, You’ll gain a psyche advantage. The rest of your foursome will think, “Why didn’t I think of that?”
  • Use sunblock. Much of the newer golf apparel has sunblock technology built in, use it when you can, and on your exposed skin use a lightweight, non-greasy sunscreen. SPF 50 is not too much.
  • Wear a hat. Regular style caps are great; but they’re not perfect. The bucket hat with the brim that goes all the way around may be more effective. But a loose, light hat will do wonders in keeping the sun off of you. It’s not just about avoiding sunburn, it’s maintaining your energy level.
  • Eat light, but eat nonetheless. Again, if we want to maintain your concentration and energy levels, starving yourself is not going to help. But the last thing you want is to feel heavy and lethargic due to a big meal before needing to walk around for five or six hours in the hot sun.
  • No shame in the cart game. Don’t let pride get in the way of staying cool. When it’s really hot, take the cart and drop the windshield for a little breeze!
  • If you’re walking – use the pull cart. Not only will you exert less energy than carrying, you’ll get more air moving around you without a bag strapped on.
  • Warm up fully but lightly. You want to be prepared for your round, so hit balls on the range and putt some on the putting green. But don’t overexert yourself. You’re going to sap your energy throughout the day. Don’t burn it all before you get to the first tee!

All of us that like to play golf know we’re going to battle the elements from time to time. Living in the Myrtle Beach area, we know that oppressive heat doesn’t mean that golf has to take a back seat. If you’re smart and prepared, you can enjoy some great times on the course!

The Shifting Sands of Myrtle Beach Golf

2017-07-24 by Ben Hunt

With Heather Glen Golf Links apparently closing at the end of the year, many people are asking about the future of Myrtle Beach golf. If it closes, Heather Glen would join a group of recently closed courses that includes Black Bear, Waterway Hills, Wicked Stick, Cypress Bay, Island Green and Wedgefield Plantation. Course closings are never a good thing, but they are also not new to the Myrtle Beach area. Courses such as Bay Tree, Marsh Harbour,  Angel’s Trace and many more have closed over the years, yet golf continues to roll on around the Grand Strand. Golf certainly isn’t dead in the area — both Crow Creek and Arcadian Shores are spending big bucks to renovate their courses — but the climate is changing. So what can we expect for the future?
